Coast Guard to Approve Level 100 Inherently Buoyant Life Jackets

The Coast Guard has issued a policy letter on obtaining Coast Guard approval on Level 100 life jackets. This policy builds upon previous efforts the Coast Guard in cooperation with Transport Canada (TC) and members of the Personal Floatation Device (PFD) community to harmonize North American PFD standards.

The Safe Boating Campaign, a worldwide effort focused on responsible boating, reminds boaters to boat sober this Fourth of July. Boating under the influence, or BUI, is the leading contributing factor in recreational boater deaths, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

New boats are everywhere on the Chesapeake Bay these days as families seek activities they can do together while keeping socially distant. With new boats come more first-time boat buyers who may not have critical at-the-helm boat handling skills. Two organizations that specialize in teaching mariners have taken notice: The Annapolis School of Seamanship (ASOS) has teamed up with the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water to host a variety of affordable on-water powerboat training classes throughout the summer for beginning, advanced and women boaters.
