Partners offer safety tips for boaters and passengers

Manassas, VA (May 16, 2014) – With warmer weather right around the corner, millions of Americans will enjoy boating with friends and family this year. The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) National Weather Service (NWS) are proud to announce their ongoing partnership to support boating safety by creating new, weather and safety-specific public service announcements (PSAs) for National Safe Boating Week, held from May 17-23, 2014.

“We want to increase boating safety awareness, to be sure that everyone enjoying time out on the water are wearing properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, and being aware of the local weather forecast. Fun boating means safe boating for all,” said Rachel Johnson, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council.

The NSBC and NOAA developed seven public service announcements to be played throughout National Safe Boating Week. Topics include: boating under the influence, thunderstorm safety, life jackets, hurricane preparedness for boaters, “Love the Life – Wear It!,” safe navigation in fog, and fire extinguishers.

The announcements as well as additional information can be found at
nws.noaa.gov/os/marine/safeboating and SafeBoatingCampaign.com.

“Boaters nationwide should know the forecast before they leave the dock,” said Louis Uccellini, Ph.D., director of NOAA’s National Weather Service. “Weather is essential for boating decisions, and the forecast could save your life! NOAA Weather Radio, mobile devices and other sources make weather information more readily available than ever before, so be weather ready!”

National Weather Service and National Safe Boating Council will collaborate with other boating safety groups and organizations to encourage safe boating on the water during National Safe Boating Week and throughout the 2014 boating season.
