Welcome, Captain Matsuura

Join the NSBC in welcoming Captain Azusa Matsuura as the director of the Japan Coast Guard's Boating and Water Safety Division. The Boating and Water Safety Division analyzes maritime accidents, coordinates efforts with the public and private sectors to implement safety measures, and provides safety information.

Captain Matsuura graduated from the Japan Coast Guard Academy Officer Candidate Course in 1993. When she was a Lieutenant Commander, she studied abroad in the United States for one year in 2006 under the U.S. state personnel exchange program. While in the U.S., she visited the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Cape May and learned about training newly appointed personnel. She was most recently the director of the Administration Department in the 8th Regional Headquarters.

We Moved to Clearwater

The NSBC headquarters has moved to Clearwater, FL! As we get settled in, you can still reach us at outreach@safeboatingcouncil.org and we'll connect you with the appropriate team member. Once the new office is complete, we'll share our address and pictures!

Our warehouse is currently only shipping training materials as we get settled into our new home. We expect our online store to be back up and running by the end of August.

Know Your Buoys

Buoys and channel markers function in a similar way to lanes on a highway — designating the safest navigable channel and marking any hazards on the water. The NSBC's Boat On Course program has a new educational initiative, Know Your Buoys, funded by a grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Know Your Buoys makes it easy for boaters to understand common buoys and markers by taking a practical approach to boating by relating it to something you’re already familiar with – the “rules of the road” when driving a car. While there are no painted lanes or traffic signals to follow on the water, you can avoid dangerous collisions by learning the rules of the road and some practical safety tips.

An educational toolkit is available to help boaters learn about buoys including a flyer, animated video series, and social media content. Resources will be available over the coming weeks at www.BoatOnCourse.com/buoys.

Summer Boating Survey

Share your thoughts about boating in a short survey for a chance to win some boating swag! Participants will be chosen randomly to receive prizes from the Safe Boating Campaign, such as t-shirts, dry bags, first aid kits, stickers, and more.
