NSBC Instructor Certification

The NSBC board and staff have changed the name of our certification course to eliminate confusion on what our instructor trainers and instructors are certified to teach. The "Essentials in Close Quarters and Open Water Boat Control" course has been renamed "National Safe Boating Council Instructor Certification."

The curriculum for the NSBC Instructor Certification course will remain the same as the Essentials in Close Quarters and Open Water Boat Control course. Updated course materials will reflect the revised name.

NSBC Instructor Trainers are certified to teach TWO courses: NSBC Instructor Certification and Boat Control On-Water Training.

NSBC Instructors are ONLY certified to teach Boat Control On-Water Training.

Please visit www.safeboatingcouncil.org/training and select Instructor Resources in the left menu for the latest NSBC Instructor Resources. If you have any questions about your NSBC instructor certification, please contact Carrie Schlemmer at cschlemmer@safeboatingcouncil.org.

The NSBC offers their instructor certification course nationwide. If you are interested in becoming a NSBC Instructor, please complete this application.

Boat On Course NEW Videos

Boat On Course, FREE educational boating safety videos from the National Safe Boating Council in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, teach the basic navigation rules of boating. Boaters may watch at their own pace and test their knowledge at the end of each video with a short quiz.

There are no white lines, street signs, or stop lights while boating. Boat On Course takes a practical approach to boating by relating it to something boaters are already familiar with – the rules of the road when driving a car.

Four new safety videos specifically for paddlers were recently added to our Boat On Course series: Boater Etiquette at Launch Areas, How to Navigate Channels as a Paddler, Safety Equipment for Paddlers, and Sharing the Waterways. Watch the new videos and test your knowledge at www.BoatOnCourse.com.

To support the demand for online boater education, please consider adding www.BoatOnCourse.com to your website.

ECOS Educational Flyers

The NSBC reminds boaters to “Get Connected” and use an engine cut-off switch (ECOS) every time they go powerboating to keep them and others safe on the water.

An engine cut-off switch attaches to the boat operator and cuts power to the boat’s engine if the operator is displaced from the helm. It also may be activated manually if needed in an emergency. An ECOS may be a lanyard attached to the engine switch, or a boat may be equipped with wireless technology that resembles a key fob or wristband. Learn more at www.GetConnectedBoating.org.

The NSBC created educational flyers to communicate the importance of using an ECOS. These are available for the cost of shipping only! These front-back flyers are full-color, 3.5″ x 8.5″, and ship in a pack of 200. It is great handout for events, trainings, and vessel safety checks. Limit 10 packs per order. Order now >>
