ECOS Resources

The NSBC's Get Connected campaign encourages boaters to use an engine cut-off switch (ECOS) every time they go powerboating to keep them and others safe on the water.

An engine cut-off switch attaches to the boat operator and cuts power to the boat’s engine if the operator is displaced from the helm. It also may be activated manually if needed in an emergency. An ECOS may be a lanyard attached to the engine switch, or a boat may be equipped with wireless technology that resembles a key fob or wristband.

Educational flyers to communicate the importance of using an ECOS are available for the cost of shipping only! These front-back flyers are full-color, 3.5″ x 8.5″, and ship in a pack of 200. It is a great handout for events, trainings, and vessel safety checks. Limit 10 packs per order. Order now.

Carbon Monoxide Awareness

Be aware of the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning while boating. Exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) in large amounts, or even small amounts for a long duration, often results in death. CO is an odorless, colorless, tasteless, and deadly gas in the exhaust produced by gasoline engines. Boats release CO through the exhaust ports of vessels that are idling, underway, or running generators. When inhaled, CO rapidly replaces oxygen in tissues. Many people are surprised they can get CO poisoning when their activity is outdoors. If CO poisoning is suspected, seek immediate medical care.

To support educational outreach efforts, these items are available for NSBC members:

Carbon Monoxide Launch Signs: Remind boaters at the dock about the risks of carbon monoxide. These FREE signs include pre-drilled holes for easy installation. Shipped in a case of 20 signs for only the cost of shipping. Get launch signs.

Portable CO Sensor: Sensorcon's professional-grade portable CO sensor is excellent for both personal and on-the-job usage. The advanced sensor technology allows for accurate readings of carbon monoxide concentrations. Free shipping. Learn more.

Safe Boating Campaign

The Safe Boating Campaign is a worldwide effort focused on responsible boating led by the National Safe Boating Council with support from boating safety advocates around the world. At its heart, the Safe Boating Campaign is a grassroots effort that collaborates with partners to share about safe boating in their local communities through events, social media, workshops, and more. It is produced under a grant from the Sports Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The National Safe Boating Council provides partners with many free and paid resources – such as brand, logo, talking points, suggested social media posts, template announcements, fact sheets, videos, photo library, posters, PSAs, banners, launch point signs, and life jacket loaner stand artwork. This effort has created worldwide recognition of the Safe Boating Campaign – reminding boaters to always wear a life jacket and boat responsibly. We are thankful for each partner for their support in building a generation of responsible boaters!

Register as a Safe Boating Campaign partner and get access to the latest information and resources. From seasonal toolkits to sample outreach plans, find all the information you need to share about responsible boating in your community.
