Life Jacket Approval Harmonization Feedback Needed

The U.S. Coast Guard proposes to amend the approval requirements and follow-up program requirements for life jackets by incorporating new standards to replace existing legacy standards. In addition, the Coast Guard proposes to amend life jacket and personal flotation device (PFD) carriage requirements to allow for the use of equipment approved to the new standards and remove obsolete equipment approval requirements. The proposed amendments would streamline the process for the approval of PFDs and allow manufacturers the opportunity to produce more innovative equipment that would meet approval requirements in both Canada and the United States, while also reducing the burden of the approval process and the production inspections on manufacturing firms.

NOAA and NSBC Continue Partnership

The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service are celebrating 24 years of partnership for the annual National Safe Boating Week, held May 20-26, 2023.

“Knowing how to understand the weather forecast, including air and water temperatures, sustained average winds and gusts, craft advisories, storms, fronts, and more is critical to ensure a safe and responsible boating experience,” explained Peg Phillips, executive director of the NSBC, a national nonprofit that helps create a safe boating experience for all recreational boaters. The NSBC is a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador, as a part of NOAA’s Weather Ready Nation™ initiative.

“The National Weather Service provides forecasts and information on winds and waves, as well as life-saving warnings ahead of severe weather events”, said Greg Schoor, Marine, Tropical and Tsunami Branch Chief of the National Weather Service. “To make safe boating decisions, boaters should check the weather forecast before going out on the water and have access to NOAA Weather Radio or other notification methods in case of changing weather.”
