#IBWSS18 Highlights

It was great to see so many of you at the 22nd annual International Boating and Water Safety Summit in Lexington, Kentucky! From engaging sessions to catching up with friends in the exhibit hall, it was an impactful experience for boating and water safety professionals.

Congratulations to Fred Messmann, recipient of our NSBC Hall of Fame award, for his vital leadership and service over several decades to recreational boating safety. It was our pleasure to present the Horizon Award to BoatUS Foundation, an NSBC Patron Level Member, for their support of our Distracted Boating research project. Staff presented retirement gifts to Sheila Chappell and Fred Messmann. Congratulations to Sheila, the 2018 recipient of the NSBC Award presented by Board Chair Chris Stec. We will miss you both!

Thank you to the U.S. Coast Guard for your dedication to recreational boating safety, members of the Japan Boating & Water Safety Summit for your continued support of this conference year after year, and our boating community partners for making the summit a success.

To see photos from the conference, please visit the NSBC Facebook page. Mark your calendars for the 2019 IBWSS in Jacksonville, Florida, March 24-27, 2019!

Spring Aboard: Register for Boating Safety Instructor Course

This week is Spring Aboard! Part of the fun is knowing what you are doing while boating. Take a safe boating course!

Working in partnership with the states, many course providers offer incentives or course discounts for students who enroll in or complete a course during the Spring Aboard campaign, March 18-24, 2018. See what your state has to offer.

Celebrate #406Day18: 41,000+ Lives Saved

406 MHz Emergency beacons have saved over 41,000 lives around the world since the early 1980’s. Join the NSBC and ACR Electronics in celebrating “Beacon Awareness Day" on April 6th. While it is a day to celebrate all the lives saved as well as the Search and Rescue personnel who rescued them, it is also an important reminder of proper beacon maintenance.

Owning a beacon comes with responsibility. Owners are encouraged to update their NOAA registration, check the beacon battery, test the beacon, and make sure the beacon is suitably mounted in an easy to access area of their boat. You can also encourage your friends to consider having a beacon on social media by sharing images pertaining to beacon safety using #406Day18 from the NSBC and ACR Electronics Facebook pages on April 6.

If you don’t already own a beacon, ACR Electronics is offering National Safe Boating Council members a special gift-with-purchase for the month of April. Buy an ACR or Ocean Signal beacon within the month of April and e-mail marketing@acrartex.com a copy of your receipt. Just type ‘NSBC Member’ in the subject line, add your mailing address and full name in the body of the email to receive your free gift. Happy #406Day18 from our friends at ACR Electronics!

Waves of Hope

Our newest safe boating initiative, Waves of Hope (previously Engaging Survivors of Recreational Boating Accidents), was supported by a group of families and friends at the International Boating and Water Safety Summit.

This coalition is working together to prevent boating and water tragedies, not through scare tactics, but through care tactics, so that one families' tragedies doesn't become another families' reality.

Thank you to the U.S. Coast Guard for your continued support of this initiative. More to come at www.wavesofhopeboating.org.
