We're making waves at the National Safe Boating Council! As a catalyst for recreational boating safety, we are dedicated to fun and safe recreational boating experiences. Our team has been busy during the past three months sharing about safe boating, exploring new partnerships and leading outreach opportunities. From Washington D.C. to St. Augustine, FL, and from North Richland Hills, TX to Lexington, KY, our team has partnered alongside many of you in our shared mission to advance safe boating. Safe Boating Campaign Worldwide Impact
The Safe Boating Campaign rebrand (a.k.a. Wear It) has made a big splash around the world! With a new brand and logo, the campaign continues to reach recreational boaters with the important message to always wear a life jacket and boat responsibly. From Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day to Ready, Set, Wear It events, the Safe Boating Campaign continues to grow.
The National Safe Boating Council team made a trek around Virginia to kick-off National Safe Boating Week, bringing the #safeboating message to the community on Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day on May 18. The team visited American Canoe Association, Freedom Boat Club of Virginia, retail stores and even snapped photos with a local fire department crew in a shopping center parking lot! The impact of Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day echoed around the world with more than 10,000 people represented in photos shared on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtags #lifejacket2work and #safeboating.
The Safe Boating Campaign was honored to have a presence at The Honor Connor 5K and Smile Mile in North Richland Hills, TX, on May 26 and Rock the River in Fredericksburg, VA, on June 2.
You can join in the #safeboating fun by planning or participating in Ready, Set, Wear It. Join boating safety advocates around the world for family-fun events to heighten awareness of boating safety issues and go for a world record for the most life jackets worn along the way! Ready, Set, Wear It (previously Ready, Set, Wear It Life Jacket World Record Day) is now four grassroots events led around the world in coordination with local partners sharing the importance of always wearing a life jacket while boating. Regardless of what event coordinators may have planned for their local event - anything from a partnership with a local retailer to a paddling experience - all event participants must wear a life jacket and be in a photo to track the number of participants. The first two events were hosted on May 19 and June 9, with 130 combined events around the world. Two additional events are on July 7 and August 11. 2018 Boating Safety Hall of Fame Inductees
The National Safe Boating Council’s Boating Safety Hall of Fame Award recognizes those who have provided vital leadership and boating safety support throughout their career.
It is an honor to induct Phil Cappel and Fred Messmann into the Boating Safety Hall of Fame!
Throughout Phil’s career with the U.S. Coast Guard, he has stood out as a leader in the never-ending pursuit of boating safety. He has been an active and passionate participant in the development of industry standards to further boating safety above and beyond what is required by federal law.
Fred faithfully served the boating safety community throughout his career, and recently retired as deputy director of the NSBC. From the Nevada Department of Wildlife to the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, and from grant program management to board positions, Fred shaped many boating safety programs and advancements.
Join us in congratulating Phil and Fred as recipients of the Boating Safety Hall of Fame Award! Welcome to a group of incredible individuals who were instrumental in advancing boating safety.
Powerboat 101: Be A Skipper
Powerboat 101: Be A Skipper is the National Safe Boating Council's pilot course for teens interested in learning on-water powerboating skills and maneuvers. In partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and BoatU.S. Foundation, 'Be A Skipper' is focused on teaching teens valuable safe boating lessons and preparing the next generation of junior captains.
Prior to on-water instruction, each teen will be required to complete a NASBLA-approved online boating safety course as well as meet the legal requirements of the state where the course is being held. In some courses, a parent or legal guardian may be required to participate with their teen in the on-water training.
During the on-water course, teens will be led through a step-by-step progression focusing on terminology, equipment, steering straight, stopping, turns up to 180-degree, docking, ferrying, avoidance turns, person overboard and retrieval. All of these skills are first performed in displacement mode. When the student masters these skills, they move on to performing the appropriate skills in planing mode. It's important for a student operator to understand concepts and design features, as well as anticipate the reaction of current, weather and wind on their boat. Each student will be assessed on their boat operation skills.
Powerboat 101: Be A Skipper is an opportunity to give teens valuable on-water experience before they are 18 years old. It is not a certification program. Be sure to read future editions of Anchorline and the monthly NSBC Member Connection e-newsletter for more updates.
Recognizing Leaders in Boating and Water Safety
At the 2018 International Boating and Water Safety Summit (Marcy 4-7, 2018), the National Safe Boating Council, National Water Safety Congress, and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators recognized leaders in boating and water safety with the IBWSS Media Campaign Contest Awards.
“We were inspired by all of the innovative and original entries we received for the media campaign contest,” said Peg Phillips, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council. “This year’s award winners have done a remarkable job of developing communications to promote boating and water safety throughout the country.”
