Dammrich will explore The Future of Recreational Boating taking a deep look at future trends for the industry. He is a leader in collaborating across recreational boating, as well as the broader outdoor community, creating a united voice in both the legislative and economic arenas. The National Marine Manufacturers Association represents the nation’s recreational boat, engine & marine accessory manufacturers.
Mitchell will provide insights into how behavior-change marketing has been used to influence everything from smoking to retirement plan deductions. How might it be used to help shape the future of recreational boating, specifically life jacket wear and boater education? Marketing for Change is one of the nation’s leading providers of behavior-change marketing, providing behavior change interventions for the CDC, Safe Kids Worldwide, World Health Organization and more.

Building the Next Generation of Safe Boaters Through On-Water Training for Teens
The National Safe Boating Council's newest teen program, Skipper Club, is more than an on-water training program. It's about building the next generation of safe boaters through on-water training and continued program opportunities in local communities. Teens ages 13-19 have the opportunity to operate a powerboat, learning valuable skills and confidence in both close-quarters and open water maneuvers.
Skipper Club is taught by NSBC certified instructors to ensure the teens are receiving the best powerboat knowledge and skills advancing from close-quarters to open water boat control. Teens are led through four course modules with a step-by-step progression focusing on terminology, equipment, steering straight, stopping, turns up to 180-degree, docking, ferrying, avoidance turns, person overboard and retrieval.
Captain Jeff Gunn, a master instructor trainer for the NSBC, says that no matter the age “slow is pro, and faster is disaster." As with most adult operators, close-quarter maneuvers such as docking, approaching the fuel dock, and leaving port can be intimidating for young boaters. Teen students learn that neutral is their friend, learning the maneuvers with slow precision. As teens master docking, turning, and maneuvering the boat in close quarters, it boosts more than their confidence.
Skipper Club was recently offered at the Sea Scouts Sea Star Base in Galveston, TX. Students shared feedback after completing a 3 hour on-water course module, proudly and confidently speaking in front of their peers as they recapped their lessons. NSBC instructor, Captain Margaret Candler, shared:
what has impressed me the most with the NSBC'S Skipper Club curriculum, besides its very detailed and comprehensive instructional format, are the results I have observed in the student’s abilities and confidence in safe and controlled vessel operation.
Social and leadership skills are a tremendous byproduct of the Skipper Club program. As we shape the next generation of recreational boaters, we are also building a team of leaders who will recruit and introduce their friends to boating. DAN Boater, one of the most recognized names in travel safety, has joined the NSBC as an Admiral Club member. “Joining the NSBC at the highest tiered membership level available, reflects our commitment to the Council’s goals and visions, which, in numerous ways, mirror those of DAN Boater," confirms William Ziefle, President and CEO of DAN. “For both of our organizations, safe boating practices are a top priority.” DAN Boater provides emergency medical services and travel safety resources to recreational boaters, cruisers, and sailors. Safe Boating Campaign: Become a Partner
Safety on the water is everyone's responsibility. Organizations can share their support for the Safe Boating Campaign (Wear It) by registering as a campaign partner and be added to a searchable online database of campaign partners. Local boating enthusiasts can connect with Safe Boating Campaign partners in their local communities. There is power in numbers to share about the importance of boating responsibly, such as always wearing a life jacket. Up to 10 registered organizations will randomly be selected to receive a free outdoor Safe Boating Campaign banner.
Adult On-Water Powerboat Training
The National Safe Boating Council is the only nationwide nonprofit organization with an on-water powerboating course to receive third-party verification based on the American National Standard for recreational boating skills. The NSBC offers "Essentials of Close-Quarters and Open Water Boat Control Course" to state agencies, fire departments, police departments, and local municipalities who patrol our waterways. Oftentimes, organizations who monitor and patrol our waterways are trained in enforcement, and do not receive in-depth safety or boat handling skills.
In our most recent course, firefighters with the Peoria Fire Department became NSBC certified instructors. These firefighters patrol and provide boating safety education for boaters on Lake Pleasant, which ranks high in the state of Arizona for recreational boating causalities and accidents. Eight firefighters completed the course under the instruction of NSBC master instructor trainer, Captain Jeff Gunn. As is often the case, the students commented that this was their first experience learning boat handling with a structured curriculum. Not only did they each learn safety and boat handling skills that could be applied to firefighting on the water, they learned how to teach safety skills to recreational boaters they encounter as they patrol the lake.
