North American Safe Boating Campaign   

The North American Safe Boating Campaign is a yearlong effort in the U.S. and Canada focused on spreading the message of boating safety and the critical importance of always wearing a life jacket each and every time on the water. In addition, the campaign also reminds boaters of the importance of boating safely, such as taking a boating safety course, never boating under the influence, and knowing navigational rules. The annual campaign kicks off the weekend before Memorial Day with National Safe Boating Week and continues throughout the year. Wear It! is produced under a grant from the Sports Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. Questions about the campaign? National Safe Boating Week 2017

This year, National Safe Boating Week will occur May 20-26 and will include events such as Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day and Ready, Set, Wear It! These events are geared towards raising the public's awareness of the importance of wearing a life jacket. Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day is a fun opportunity to educate coworkers or building mates about the proper life jacket for them, different styles, and how to use an inflatable life jacket.

Ready, Set, Wear It! is a life jacket world record day where individuals and organizations around the world host events where participants wear life jackets. These events are documented and then counted by the NSBC. The record to beat this year is 10,917. Find out more information at or register an event here.

Annual Awareness Survey

The Awareness Study is our annual effort to measure the success of the campaign. In 2016, we found that boaters in locations with high campaign activity wear their life jackets “always or most of the time” with a 90 percent confidence level.


In 2016, the Annual Awareness Survey was honored with an Honorable Mention award in the Research & Measurement category of the Platinum PR Awards.

Key findings from this extensive research effort include: "Boaters who are aware of the Wear It! campaign are significantly more likely than those who are unaware to wear their life jackets 'always or most of the time' " and 
"Top two main barriers to using life jackets are, discomfort and no legal requirement to wear one."
