BoatBeat is the First Collaborative Online Hub of Recreational Boating Resources
A new online hub for the media, boating educators, boating accident reporters, public information officers, law enforcement officials, and the general public promises to make the waters safer by providing comprehensive information about the potential hazards associated with boating, safe boating practices, and accident prevention.
BoatBeat is a collaboration among the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC), the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Prepare to ‘Spring Aboard’ and Participate in a Boating Education Course
The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) encourage boaters to enroll in a boating education course prior to the kickoff of the boating season. During the week of March 19-25, as part of the Spring Aboard – Take A Boating Education Course campaign, many course providers are offering discounts or other incentives for students who enroll or complete a boating safety education course.

Dan Ratner joins the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) as its new Marketing and Membership Specialist. Dan brings with him 20 years of experience in membership development for nonprofit organizations. Throughout his professional career, he has held positions with American National Standards Institute (ANSI), ASCD, and most recently, the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB).
Using the adjective "grass-roots" has become quite the trend in recent years, and rightfully so. Things like grass-roots marketing and grass-roots political campaigns have made an impact in today's society, and the recreational boating safety community is no exception to this trend.
The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC), a national non-profit organization, is just one of many nonprofits utilizing key methods and techniques in implementing grass-roots efforts nationwide--and it's seeing a real behavior change in recreational boaters because of it.
Emergency Locator Beacons Provide Life Saving Communication
A perfect day on the water can quickly change. A boat may hit an unseen object, a wave capsizes it, a sudden storm makes navigation impossible, or equipment fails. In situations like these, communication is key. Many boaters operate in locations beyond cell phone towers and the line-of-sight capabilities of their VHF radio, so owning and registering an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) can mean the difference between life and death.

Corporal (Cpl.) Underwood of the Saint Johns County Sheriff’s Office is the recipient of the 2016 NASBLA Boating Safety Award, sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC), for his efforts to promote responsible boating throughout Florida. As Florida continues to be the top state for recreational boating deaths and accidents, this is no easy task. Cpl. Underwood’s dedication to the profession, and especially to boating safety, has made a positive change in the local boating community and boaters now know him know him as "the life jacket guy." Major Richard Moore, Boating Law Administrator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Chair of the NSBC, awarded Cpl. Underwood with this honor at the Saint Johns County Sheriff’s Office on November 18, 2016.
