OMC "Take Em Boating" Grant Winners

Kama’aina Kids

Kama’aina Kids is the 2011 winner of the OMC "Take 'Em Boating" Grant with their Boating on the Bay program. The Boating on the Bay program is an educational and environmental program designed to help children understand the value and importance of that waters that surround the island state of Hawaii.
This is achieved through offering waterfront programs teaching children basic water and boating safety skills such as different boating techniques, swimming, and basic marine biology and ocean preservation..

2010 - Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region
Living Classrooms Foundation is the 2010 OMC Award Winner with their program, “M/V Half Shell Shipboard Program.” In the shipboard program, the living classroom is a 1928 Chesapeake Bay Buyboat, “M/V Half Shell.” Students come aboard for a two to five hour long program. While on board students participate in the hands on activities designed to introduce them to a topic of science or boating. The activities include fishing, water quality testing, oyster dissection, bottom sampling, model boat building, navigation and taking the helm.
2009 - The United States Adaptive Recreation Center (USARC)
The United States Adaptive Recreation Center has been awarded the fourth annual National Safe Boating Council “Take ‘Em Boating” grant for their Environmental Education and Kayaking in Public Schools for Children with Disabilities program. This collaborative effort with public schools provides free kayak lessons to children.
The program helps to enable teachers to safely utilize their local lake as an extension of the environmental education classroom for children with special needs. The overall goal is to help children develop the lifelong recreational skill of kayaking.
2008 - The Associate Students, CSU Chico Forebay Aquatic Center
The Associate Students, CSU Chico Forebay Aquatic Center has been awarded the 2008 National Safe Boating Council “Take ‘Em Boating” Grant for their program “Boating & Environmental Education Day”. This one-day program teaches school students ages 8 to 17 safe and responsible boating and environmental awareness through hands-on instruction. Students learn about different types of boats, uses and safety precautions in a classroom setting and can then take these skills and apply them on the water, creating a positive outdoor recreation experience for our youth.
2007 - Houston Safe Boating Council
The Houston Safe Boating Council is the winner of the 2007, National Safe Boating Council “Take ‘Em Boating” Grant, for their program, Water Activities Day Event (WADE). This three-day program teaches boating safety to youth, ages 13 to 18, and gives them hands-on experience with sailboats, powerboats, kayaks and personal watercraft. The youth also receive classroom instruction in boat handling procedures, Texas Boating laws, protecting the marine environment, and boating courtesy.
2006 - The Perseus House, Charter School of Excellence at the Maritime Center
The Perseus House, Charter School of Excellence at the Maritime Center in Erie, Pennsylvania is the 2006 and first annual National Safe Boating Council’s “Take ‘Em Boating” Grant winner. Their program, “Keeping Kids Afloat” is aimed at children in Erie who live near the waters of Lake Erie. Surrounded by water, many of the students have never had the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of this natural resource. For most of these children it has been their first experience learning about this resource or even being on a boat.
